Curly Flat, located in the Macedon Ranges, is a small, privately owned, estate-based vineyard and winery.
Curly Flat was developed from 1989 by Phillip Moraghan and Jenifer Kolkka after the greenfield site had been identified as ideal for growing the early ripening varieties of pinot noir and chardonnay. In 2017, Jenifer became the sole owner of Curly Flat. Under her leadership, the winery’s reputation for high-quality winemaking continues. Jenifer and her team, led by winemaker Matt Harrop, are fully committed to producing the best possible wines from the carefully nurtured site.
The combination of warm days, cool nights and very low rainfall manifested in a more powerfully structured yet fragrant Pinot Noir that serves to showcase the quality of tannin that is grown in our vineyards.
Volcanic Basalt & Upper Ordovician soils, MV6, 115 and 114 clones are used from vines aged 19 to 28 years.
The 2019 Estate Pinot Noir consists of seventeen separate lots representing distinct aspects, clones and soils. Each of these parcels were handled with minimum intervention in the winery with the aim of maximising site expression. Indigenous yeasts connect all ferment but varying amounts of whole bunch, post ferment skin contact and individual oak handling were utilised respective to the lot characters themselves. These parcels combine to form our most complex Pinot Noir. After 16 months maturation our Estate blend consists of 22% whole bunch and 22% new oak and was bottled without filtration.
Fragrant spices and a red fruit lift that seamlessly merges with darker fruits and more savoury complexities. A myriad of vineyard-based tannin entwines with gentle oak handling to accentuate a length of mineral clarity.
Guinea fowl, pigeon, or garlic crusted rack of lamb.
Drink now or carefully cellaring for 10 years.
Don’t just take our word for it…
“My scribbled note ended with the words ‘the team at Curly are adjusting brilliantly to different vintage profiles – they just don’t seem to put a foot wrong’. The 2018 was epic, the 2019 in the same class. Drink 2025-2036+.” – Simon Larkin MW, Atlus Fine Wines
